Yan Wang Preston

Dr Yan Wang Preston is a British-Chinese visual artist interested in landscape, identity, migration and the environment. Her major projects include Mother River (2010-2014), Forest (2010-2017), With Love. From an Invader.(2020-2011) and Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer (2020-2023). Preston’s work has won many international awards, such as the 1stPrize in Professional Landscape, Sony World Photography Awards (2019) and the 1st Prize in Professional Commission, Syngenta Photography Award (2017). 


Preston’s work has been widely exhibited nationally and internationally. Her solo exhibitions have been presented at venues such as the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, Messums London, Site Gallery, Look Photo Festival, Xposure International Photography Festival, Gallery of Photography Ireland, the 56th Venice Biennale, Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum, and Wuhan Art Museum. Important group shows include In Blossom (Fotografiskia, Sweden), Energy: Sparks from the Collection, the V&A,  Jeddah Photo 2022, Fotofest 2020 and Dubai Photo. 


Preston’s monographs ‘Forest’ and ‘Mother River’ were both published by Hatje Cantz in 2018. Her work is collected by public institutions such as Wuhan Art Museum in China, National Trust, UK, the Victoria and Albert Museum, UK, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, USA, as well as private collectors worldwide.


Preston was originally trained in Clinical Medicine in Fudan University, China. She emigrated to the UK in 2005 and was awarded a PhD in Photography from the University of Plymouth in 2018. Besides of her artistic practice, she lectures at the University of Huddersfield, UK.

Ashlyn Davis Burns

Ashlyn Davis Burns is a founding director of Assembly, a multi-faceted gallery and platform that works with contemporary, lens-based artists across virtual andin-person programs. She has worked to support photographic artists for the pastdecade through curatorial, editorial, and fundraising initiatives, including mostrecently as the Executive Director & Curator of Houston Center for Photography(2015-2020). She has written for numerous publications, consulted with artists andpublishers on photobooks, and curated exhibitions internationally for a variety ofinstitutions including libraries, universities, and galleries. She earned her BA in Art History from Pratt Institute and her Master's Degree in American Studies at theUniversity of Texas with a focus on American photography and culture.

Ingrid Pollard

Highly respected, acclaimed, award-winning photographic artist Ingrid Pollard is our next speaker for the TRACE Mentorship. Ingrid is an inspiration and has overcome many of the obstacles faced by female artists over the age of 35. We are thrilled to welcome Ingrid to share her great knowledge, experience and practice with us.

Ingrid Pollard (born Guyana) comes from a community arts background and training in screen printing, film and photography. In the past her work has also documented the work of performers, writers and theatre companies. Pollard studied Film and Video at the London College of Printing and MA in Photographic Studies, University of Derby and a PhD at Westminster University. 

She is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society (2016) for contributions to Photography. Pollard has exhibited widely in Europe and America, including Tate Britain, Victoria & Albert Museum & Photographers Gallery, London, NGBK, Berlin, the Caribbean Cultural Centre, New York, the National Art Gallery of Barbados and Camerawork, San Francisco.

Recent exhibitions include, Deep Down Body Thirst, Glasgow International, (2018)The Lie of the Land, MK Gallery (2018), Sapphic Modernism, John Hansard Gallery, Southampton (2018), Hot Moment at Auto Italia 2020, In Front of The Sea, Centre d’art Contemprian, France (2021)
In 2019 she was awarded a Baltic Artists Award and was recipient of the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Artists Award. In 2020 she was the Freeland Foundation Award with MK Gallery. She is a nominee for Turner Prize 2022.

Tracy
Marshall-Grant

We are delighted to welcome acclaimed Arts Director, Curator and Producer Tracy Marshall-Grant as our next inspirational speaker. Tracy will discuss the many challenges and opportunities that she has faced in a career spanning more than thirty years.

Sharing her knowledge and experience in negotiating the large-scale projects she has undertaken she will offer expert advice and suggestions on funding, marketing and strategies for their successful realisation.

Tracy Marshall- Grant is an Arts Director, Curator & Producer specializing in the production of photography exhibitions, festivals, education, and archive projects. She is currently Director of Development for the Royal Photographic Society and previously directed Bristol Photo Festival and LOOK Photo Biennial in Liverpool. Tracy has also been Director of Development at Open Eye Gallery Liverpool and Executive Director at Belfast Exposed Gallery.

Acclaimed, award-winning photographic artist Siân Davey is our first inspirational speaker for the TRACE Mentorship, Siân is a fantastic example of a woman who has overcome many of the obstacles faced by female artists over the age of 35. She will be talking about how she continues to navigate these barriers while maintaining integrity within her practice.

Siân Davey is a photographer with a background in Fine Art and Social Policy. For the past 15 years she has worked as a humanist psychotherapist. Her photography work is an investigation of the psychological landscapes of both herself and those around her, with her family and community being central to her practice.

After visiting the Louise Bourgeoise retrospective at the Tate London (2007), Davey was immediately inspired to translate her history creatively.  In 2011 she found her medium, the camera and committed to the process of photography.In 2012 she entered an MA programme and followed it though with an MFA in photography. Davey has since produced work about each of her children and which serve as a portal to her unconscious world.

She has been the recipient for numerous awards including the winner of the Arnold Newman Award for New Directions in Portraiture, Prix Virginia Woman’s Photography Award and 3 consecutive years the National Gallery Taylor Wessing Portrait Award. Her book ‘Looking for Alice’ was shortlisted for Paris Photo – Aperture Best Book Award Shortlist 2016 and shortlisted for the Kraszna – Krausz Foundation Book Award. Her second book ‘Martha’ was published with Trolley Books 2018. Davey is represented by the Michael Hoppen Gallery, London.
